Notes:
Benedict and Elizabeth (Kell) Bauer - Bower immigrated from Germany to the U.S. in 1833 where he changed the spelling of his name from Bauer to Bower.

They moved by wagon train to Smithland, Iowa, in about 1854 so first lived elsewhere. Their youngest children came with them from Germany, any older ones there might have remained in Germany. No record of any.

Those who came to U.S. were Joseph, Thomas, Theresa, Helen and Genevieve.

This came from Gladys Snyder (Gladys Marie Castle, granddaughter of Helen Louise Elizabeth Bower) and/or Lucy Vaught, granddaughter of Helen Louise Elizabeth Bower

In a listing of the census' sent to me by Norma Beil (NBEIL@aol.com) Benedict and Elizabeth were listed as living with son Thomas in the 1860 census and were not mentioned in the 1870 census, so I am assuming that they died sometime between 1860 and 1870. They were also living with Thomas in 1854 when he brought them to Iowa. At that time Elizabeth was 68 years old and blind and Benedict was 71.

The 1860 census lists Benedict as 78 and Elizabeth as 75.

Bower family records come from book History of counties Woodbury and Plymouth, Warner &Co. publishers, 1890-1891 page 295;

Smithland Souvenir Booklet, 1935;

Sioux City Journal News, 1943 by staff writer, "Smithland, Proud of its History";

Historical sketch by Rev. A Pruitt.

Benedict's death date is from World Family Tree Vol. 5 pedigree #2538. As benedict is listed on the 1860 census and not the 1870 census the date is probably good for the year, but unknown if the actual day/month is correct.
