Smithland Residential Area
County: Woodbury
State: IA
History: The town of Smithland, sometimes called Smithtown, was settled by three Apostate Mormons; William White, Curtis Lamb, and J. Sumner. In honor of the first of these, it was originally called Whites Settlement. In 1852, Orrin B. Smith, his brother Edwin, and John Hurley, purchased two claims from Sumner. The settlement became known as Smithland, in honor of Smith who greatly helped build the community.

One might assume that since her last child was born in 1868 and Genevieve died in 1868 that she may have died in childbirth or shortly thereafter.

"Genevieve (Bower) Smith raised his three girls plus eight of their own. They [Genevieve and Orrin's children] were Helen, Chloe, Orrin, Frank, Patience, Hugh and Washington."
