1940, he joined the Navy and was on the Neutrality Patrol in the Atlantic Ocean before World War II, where he was privileged to meet Prime Minister Winston Churchill and King George of England. He served aboard a number of various kinds of ships during his eight-year Navy career, most notably the battleship USS New Mexico, the Promethius, and two sea plane tenders, the Cook Inlet and the Valcour. He was engaged in numerous major battles in the South Pacific during the war. He was the lightweight boxing champion of the South Pacific Theatre of Operations. He loved the Navy.
After leaving the Navy in 1948, he worked as a heavy duty mechanic and in supervisory positions in the mining and railroading fields in various parts of the United States, including the uranium mines near Grants, N.M. He was also master mechanic at the big Kennecott open pit mines in Ruth, Nev., and at the Santa Maria Railroad in California. He also owned and operated an A & W Root Beer business in McAllen. After coming to Alaska in 1967, he worked on oil rigs in Port Heiden and in Cook Inlet, and was also a part of the building of the pipeline on the North Slope. He retired from the Alaska Railroad in 1986, and enjoyed his home near Palmer since 1978. He lived in Kenai from 1967 to 1972, in Eagle River from 1973 to 1978, and in Palmer since 1978.
He was a member of the Masonic Order and a member of Kerak Temple of the Shrine in Reno, Nev., and was a charter member of VFW Post
