Parents were born in Missouri, lived there, but moved to Arkansas for a short time where Silas was born.

According to land records Silas was a resident of Delta County at one time.

Delta County, Texas Land Records, Bk. B, pg. 7- "S. W. and Manda Herrin of Delta County, Texas were recorded as selling land on 22 of September, 1873 to Abe Hill.
